Learning to Live with COVID

This month’s program will explore the question on all our minds: how do we live with COVID? The virus has been around for nearly three years now. Will we get to a point where it’s incorporated into other common viruses? What does “living with the virus” mean if you’re immunocompromised? What tools will best allow us to coexist with the virus?
These questions and more will be addressed through a lively discussion featuring Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health, and E. John Wherry, director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Immunology.
The panel will be hosted by representatives from Annovis Bio. Consultant Charles Alcorn will introduce the event. Our moderators will be founder, president, and CEO Maria L. Maccecchini and senior vice president of research & development Cheng Fang.

Jennifer Nuzzo.
Jennifer Nuzzo is a professor of epidemiology and director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health. She is also a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). An epidemiologist by training, her work focuses on global health security, public health preparedness and response, and health systems resilience.
Together with colleagues from the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the Economist Intelligence Unit, she coleads the development of the first-ever Global Health Security Index, which benchmarks 195 countries’ public health and healthcare capacities and capabilities, their commitment to international norms and global health security financing, and their socioeconomic, political, and environmental risk environments. She also directs the Outbreak Observatory, which conducts, in partnership with frontline public health practitioners, operational research to improve outbreak preparedness and response.
Nuzzo is currently a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Standing Committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Center for Preparedness and Response. She received a DrPH in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an SM in environmental health from Harvard University, and a BS in environmental sciences from Rutgers University.

E. John Wherry is the Barbara and Richard Schiffrin President’s Distinguished Professor, Chair of the Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics in the Perelman School of Medicine, and Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Immunology. He received his PhD at Thomas Jefferson University in 2000 and performed postdoctoral research at Emory University from 2000 to 2004.
Wherry has received numerous honors including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Thomas Jefferson University, the Cancer Research Institute’s Frederick W. Alt Award for New Discoveries in Immunology, and the Stanley N. Cohen Biomedical Research Award from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. He was inducted as an AAAS Fellow in 2021. As of November 2022, Wherry has over 300 publications and an H-Index of 126. His publications have been cited more than 86,000 times.
